Dubai Announces First Self-Driving Electric Abras

DUBAI: Known for its innovative and ambitious projects, Dubai has recently made a remarkable stride in the realm of transportation with the introduction of electric driverless abras in its city waters.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has taken a momentous step forward in realizing Dubai's Strategy for Self-Driving Transport, which aims to convert 25% of total mobility journeys into self-driving journeys by 2030.

One of the prime features of this initiative is the locally manufactured autonomous electric abra, a watercraft designed to carry up to eight passengers. The RTA's Al Garhoud Marine Maintenance Centre has skillfully crafted this vessel, ensuring it maintains the heritage identity of traditional abras, which have served as transportation vessels along Dubai Creek for centuries.

The first test voyage of the electric autonomous abra commenced from Al Jaddaf Station and traversed Dubai Creek until reaching the Festival City Station. Throughout this trial, the driverless abra showcased its capabilities by achieving Level 4 out of the six recognized international autonomy levels for ship design and operation.

This remarkable achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Exalto Emirates, Marakeb companies, and the RTA. The operation itself was entirely autonomous, with the captain assuming the role of an operational supervisor and intervening only when necessary.

Equipped with two electric motors capable of propelling it at a maximum speed of seven knots, the electric driverless abra boasts an autonomous control system and four lithium batteries, ensuring a seven-hour operating time.

Apart from its technological prowess, the abra also prides itself on its eco-friendly and cost-effective nature. It produces zero carbon emissions, significantly reducing environmental impact, while simultaneously cutting down operating and maintenance costs by 30% compared to its diesel-powered counterparts. Additionally, the abra eliminates noise pollution, further enhancing the quality of life for those residing in the vicinity.

The introduction of electric driverless abras in Dubai signifies a significant step toward realizing the city's master plan to curb carbon emissions associated with public transportation. Moreover, it aligns perfectly with the requirements set by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, showcasing Dubai's commitment to sustainable and environmentally conscious transportation solutions.

As the city grows and its concerns regarding environmental pollution and high operational costs escalate, the autonomous electric abra offers a sustainable alternative to the traditional diesel-powered abras, addressing these pressing issues head-on.

The RTA has developed a comprehensive master plan aimed at further enhancing marine transport within the Emirate. With approximately 16 million riders utilizing marine transport in 2022 alone, the plan focuses on improving four traditional abra stations situated along Dubai Creek: Bur Dubai, Deira Old Souk, Dubai Old Souk, and Al Sabkha.

This ambitious plan encompasses a 33% increase in the capacity of abra stations, leveraging advanced technologies to reduce maintenance costs and prolong the lifespan of assets, as well as improving lighting within the stations and marinas. The plan also includes the provision of customer facilities and investment areas, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for passengers.

The introduction of the autonomous electric abra represents a significant milestone in Dubai's journey toward achieving a sustainable and efficient transportation system. It provides a glimpse into the future of transportation, where autonomous electric vehicles will gradually replace conventional modes of travel.

By harnessing the power of technology, Dubai is creating sustainable solutions that benefit both its people and the environment, setting a shining example for others to follow.

The introduction of electric driverless abras in Dubai marks a pivotal development in the pursuit of a sustainable and efficient transportation system.

The autonomous electric abra stands as a testament to Dubai's commitment to eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and sustainable solutions that address the mounting concerns of environmental pollution and high operational costs associated with traditional diesel-powered abras.
