ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has been arrested by Rangers inside the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises. This bold move was made following the warrants for Imran Khan's arrest in the Al Qadir Trust case by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Reports from Pakistan indicate that Imran Khan was taken into custody by Rangers, who are a paramilitary law enforcement agency in the country. This happened inside the IHC, where the PTI leader was scheduled to appear before the court on charges of sedition and an attempted murder of Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha.
The Accountability Bureau (NAB) had earlier issued warrants for the arrest of Imran Khan on 1st May for the Al Qadir Trust case. The bureau had instructed the Inspector General (IG) Punjab to arrest the PTI leader in connection with the case.
Apart from the Al Qadir Trust case, Imran Khan's arrest by Rangers also has to do with his comments about military institutions. The PTI chairman had made remarks that were seen as being critical of the military, which did not go down well with the authorities.
As a result, the IHC detained Imran Khan, who is now in the custody of the NAB. He is set to undergo a medical check-up, and a medical board will be established in Islamabad.
The arrest of Imran Khan by Rangers inside the IHC has sparked widespread reactions, with many people expressing concern over the state of democracy in Pakistan. While the NAB has been cracking down on corruption in the country, the detention of the PTI leader raises questions about the impartiality of the bureau.
Nonetheless, the arrest of Imran Khan shows that nobody is above the law in Pakistan, and that everyone, regardless of their status, is subject to the same legal process.
This development will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications, and we can only wait to see how it will play out in the days ahead.
