Instagram to Launch Text-Based App to Compete Twitter
NEW YORK: According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Meta-owned Instagram is planning to launch a text-based app to directly compete with Twitter.

The app is currently being tested with celebrities and influencers, as disclosed by sources familiar with the matter. Interestingly, the project has reportedly been available to select creators for several months.

Lia Haberman, an instructor specializing in social media and influencer marketing at UCLA, provided valuable insights regarding the forthcoming platform.

She mentioned that the new app would function separately from Instagram but might offer users the option to connect their accounts.

Haberman also revealed that the app is expected to be compatible with other Twitter competitors, such as Mastodon.

The timing of this app's potential release seems strategic. Since Elon Musk's controversial takeover of Twitter, which has brought about significant changes like the introduction of paid subscriptions, users have started exploring alternative options.

Haberman commented on Meta's tendency to adopt features from other apps and third-party tools based on their predictions of user preferences. She specifically highlighted Musk's vision of transforming Twitter into an "everything app" with an array of features beyond informational posts.

Given Meta's track record of borrowing ideas from different platforms, it is highly likely that they will be the first to consolidate these diverse experiences into one cohesive application.

The new text-based app is expected to launch as early as June this year, offering users an alternative to Twitter and potentially capturing the attention of those seeking fresh social media experiences.
