KATHMANDO: Mount Everest has been witness to countless mountaineering achievements, but none as remarkable and inspirational as that of Hari Budhamagar, a Nepalese man who scaled the world's tallest mountain with artificial legs.
Hari, a former Nepalese soldier who tragically lost both his legs while serving in the British Gurkha unit in Afghanistan back in 2010, faced a seemingly insurmountable challenge.
In 2017, the Nepalese government imposed a ban on double-amputee climbers, along with blind and solo hikers, dashing Hari's hopes of pursuing his climbing passion.
However, in 2018, a petition was filed challenging this prohibition, leading to a subsequent lifting of the ban. This turn of events reignited Hari's determination to pursue his lifelong dream of conquering Mount Everest, pushing past physical, mental, and societal obstacles.
On May 19th, at approximately 3 p.m., Hari proudly stood atop Mount Everest, becoming the first-ever double-amputee to achieve this extraordinary feat. His unwavering resolve to pursue his dream, even 13 years after losing his legs, serves as a testament to his indomitable spirit.
In a recent update on his Twitter account, Hari expressed his gratitude, stating that the journey was undoubtedly challenging.
However, he emphasized that if he, with his disability, could conquer Mount Everest, then anyone can achieve their dreams.
His words serve as a beacon of hope for all those facing struggles in their own lives, as he profoundly remarked, "No matter how big your dreams, no matter how challenging your disability, with the right mindset, anything is possible."
