Asad Umar Resigns as PTI Secretary General

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Umar announced on Wednesday that he was stepping down as the party's secretary general after serving in the position for the last 17 months.

During a press conference held in Islamabad, he made an announcement that he would no longer retain his membership in the core committee of the PTI. However, he explicitly stated that his decision did not entail his departure from the party itself.

The former federal minister said that, given the current situation after May 9, it is not personally possible for him to continue performing his party leadership duties.

"I am resigning from my positions as secretary general and core committee member of PTI. One of the reasons for my resignation is that I am an outspoken person and I cannot issue personal statements while holding an office." He said

Umar did not elaborate on what he meant by "the current situation." However, his resignation comes just days after the PTI was ousted from power in a no-confidence motion.

Umar was appointed PTI secretary general in August 2021. He served as the federal minister for finance from August 2018 to April 2019.

In his resignation speech, Umar thanked PTI chairman Imran Khan for giving him the opportunity to serve the party. He also expressed his gratitude to the party's workers and supporters.

Asad Umar said that he will continue to serve the party and the nation in any way that he can.

Umar's resignation is a major blow to the PTI. He was one of the party's most prominent leaders and was seen as a potential successor to Khan.

It remains to be seen who will replace Umar as PTI secretary general. However, his resignation is a sign of the turmoil that the party is currently facing.
