Google Announcess to Delete Inactive Accounts

NEW YORK: Google recently announced that it will delete unused accounts after a period of two years in an effort to prevent potential security threats, such as hacking.

The company stated that it will delete the account and content across Google Workspace, which includes popular services like Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet and Calendar, as well as YouTube and Google Photos if it has not been used or signed into for at least two years.

Interestingly, this policy change only applies to personal Google Accounts and not to those used by organizations like schools or businesses.

Previously, Google had announced its intention to eliminate the stored content within inactive accounts, without, however, deleting the accounts themselves.

As of this week, Google plans to issue several notifications to the email address linked to the account as well as the recovery email address of inactive accounts before proceeding with their deletion.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, also recently announced that Twitter would remove inactive accounts and archive them, stating that it was important to free up abandoned handles.

It remains to be seen how these policy changes will impact online activity, but it is clear that companies are taking steps to prevent potential security threats.

By deleting unused accounts, Google aims to enhance security and protect users' information from potential breaches.

The decision to send multiple notifications to inactive account holders demonstrates Google's commitment to informing users and giving them an opportunity to take action before their accounts are permanently removed.

As Google and Twitter take steps to delete inactive accounts and archive unused handles respectively, the digital landscape undergoes continuous evolution to ensure user safety and maintain a robust online environment.

These measures, although potentially inconvenient for some, ultimately contribute to a safer and more streamlined user experience in the digital realm.
