ISLAMABAD: Former parliamentarian Maleeka Bokhari on Thursday announced her resignation from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Bokhari, who is a lawyer by profession, said she was resigning from the party in protest against the May 9 riots in Islamabad.
During a press conference held in Islamabad, she expressed her strong disapproval of the incidents that unfolded on May 9, emphasizing the immense anguish they caused for all Pakistanis.
Addressing the situation, she affirmed that her decision was not influenced by any external pressure or coercion. As a lawyer, her intention is to contribute positively to Pakistan, while also expressing the importance of dedicating time to her family.
Bokhari’s resignation comes amid a wave of resignations from PTI leaders who have been critical of Khan’s leadership.
In recent weeks, several PTI leaders, including former ministers Fawad Chaudhry, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and Shireen Mazari, have resigned from the party.
The resignations have come as a major blow to Khan, who is facing increasing pressure to step down as prime minister.
Khan has been accused of mishandling the economy and of failing to provide relief to the people.
He has also been criticized for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bokhari’s resignation is a further sign of the growing discontent within PTI. It remains to be seen whether Khan will be able to weather the storm and remain in power.
