ISLAMABAD: Pervez Khattak, the president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has resigned from his position. Khattak, who is also a former chief minister of the province, announced his resignation on Saturday.
In a statement, Khattak said that he had decided to resign after careful consideration. He said that he had already condemned the attacks on military installations on May 9, after the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan.

"The events of May 9 were harmful to the country and should not be repeated," Khattak said. "I believe it is difficult for me to continue in a party position under these circumstances."
Amir Bakhsh Bhutto, the PTI's general secretary in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, also resigned from his position on Saturday. Bhutto said that he had excused himself from taking part in politics.
The resignations of Khattak and Bhutto come at a time of political turmoil in Pakistan. The PTI has been protesting against the government since Khan's ouster in a no-confidence motion on April 9. The party has also been holding rallies and demonstrations across the country.

The PTI has accused the government of being involved in the May 9 attacks. The government has denied the allegations.
The resignations of Khattak and Bhutto are a blow to the PTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The party is now without a president and general secretary in the province.
It remains to be seen how the PTI will move forward in the wake of the resignations. The party is expected to hold a meeting of its core committee in the coming days to discuss the situation.
